The long-term vision
A successful club has a vision. Set your objectives: survive in the top flight? Chase the title? Build through the academy? Buy ready-made stars? Every strategy carries its own consequences.
Your strategy shapes your decisions. A developing club invests in its academy and trusts its youngsters; an ambitious club spends on transfers and wages. Whichever you pick, stay consistent with it.
The matchday line-up
This is the moment of truth. Place your eleven starters on the pitch according to the formation you have chosen, making sure each position is filled by a player suited to it.
Check every player's form before naming him. A tired or out-of-sorts player will underperform. Sometimes a substitute in good form is worth more than an exhausted first-choice starter.
The art of the substitution
Matches are won from the bench too. Plan your changes in advance: at which minute? Depending on the score? When a player tires? And who comes on first?
A well-judged substitution can turn a match: fresh legs against a tiring defence, a striker when you are behind, a defender to protect a lead. Anticipate every scenario before kick-off.
Managing the dressing room
Organise your squad into groups: the first team (your regular starters), the reserves (quality back-up) and the youngsters (the prospects you want to develop).
This structure helps you manage rotation, see who needs minutes and who could go out on loan. A first-team player who never plays soon becomes unhappy.
Tactical instructions
Beyond the formation, give your side precise instructions: tempo (slow to keep the ball, quick to counter), pressing intensity, the width of your block and how high the defensive line sits.
These settings directly shape how your players behave during the match. Adapt them to each opponent: against a fast side, sitting deep can be what saves you.
